Wonderfalls (2004)

This quirky TV series by genre guru Bryan Fuller isn't his latest project, but it's certainly one of his most consistently enjoyable.

Wonderfalls is set in the kitsch tourist district of Niagara Falls, where Jaye Tyler (Caroline Dhavernas) is stuck in a casually apathetic rut, until one day, inanimate objects start telling her to do things.

Wonderfalls is much gentler than Fuller's earlier series, Dead Like Me (2003), and much less saccharine than his later Pushing Daisies (2007). The series aims for a slightly surreal, comic tone, so while the stories lack strong emotional punch, they're still highly engaging.

The cast are almost uniformly excellent in delivering Fuller's particular brand of dry, offbeat humour. Dhavernas is an absolute standout as the cynical Jaye, bringing charisma, warmth, and fantastic comic timing to a potentially irritating character. William Sadler (Sheriff Valenti from Roswell , 1999) is great as Jaye's supportive dad, and Diana Scarwid is flawless as her exceptionally poised mother. Also deserving a mention are Katie Finneran and Lee Pace, who are both very entertaining as Jaye's overachieving, concerned siblings.

The series reminds me a little of Joan of Arcadia (2003), which also features an unmotivated member of Gen-Y, being called upon to perform random acts of benevolence. However, it's a theme I enjoy, and Wonderfalls does it well.

Wonderfalls only lasted one season of 14 episodes, but aside from a few patchy episodes, it's a pretty solid season and well worth the investment. It's certainly a pity the series ended before its time.

Verdict: A quirky comedy drama with surreal touches and a positive message. Not to mention an infectiously cheery theme song. Highly watchable.

If you like Dead Like Me (2003), you'll probably like this.
