ALARIS' REVIEWS
18th October 2009
Once (2006)
As I've mentioned in previous reviews, I'm not a fan of naturalistic dramas, particularly if they involve circular, repetitive dialogue. While Once doesn't have a compelling plot, or great writing, the film does get points for its lovely songs.
The main character in Once is a vacuum cleaner repairman known only as 'the guy', who dreams of moving to London and making it big as a musician. He writes heartbreaking songs about lost love, and while busking his guts out one night, he meets the frank and encouraging Marketa, who also pines for a musical outlet.
By my standards, not a lot happens in this film - some small, optimistic steps, and a lot of nice songs. The acting is passable, but the two leads do a much better job of conveying emotion through their music. Marketa (Marketa Iglová) has a sweet, melancholy voice, and the guy (Glen Hansard) sings with genuine feeling. The song 'Falling Slowly' is a wistful standout.
Once plays almost like a documentary, with low key scenes strung between the various songs. If you're looking for an exciting, engaging drama, this isn't the film for you. If naturalistic is your thing, you'll probably enjoy this.
Verdict: A slow, low key drama, with some nice songs.
