Love Actually (2003)

Love Actually is, quite simply, one of the best movies I have seen all year. If I gave out stars like Margaret and David, it would get five.

Love Actually is set in the weeks leading up to Christmas, a time when yearning transforms into daring and confessions of the heart are revealed. Ten storylines deftly weave around each other, meeting here and there throughout. It is no mean feat to achieve, especially when each has characters we need to care about. That this movie succeeds is testament to the superb quality of the script and the skills of the actors.

Highlights include Bill Nighy as an aging rockstar whose shameless antics drive his manager to despair, Colin Firth as a writer who forges a connection with his housekeeper that defies language barriers, Liam Neeson as a widower advising his young stepson about first love, and Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson as an old married couple navigating hazardous shoals in their relationship. The cast list resembles a who's who of British talent of the last few decades, a fabulous chance to see actors of this calibre sharing the screen together.

Wonderful moments seed the entire movie, and by the end I was crying like a waterworks. Uplifting and inspirational and a total delight to watch - a reminder of why love is the highest of all human emotions, and should be celebrated in all its manifold forms.
