Tangled (2010)

Tangled is the story of Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore), a girl who has lived all her life in a tower, guarded by her mother from the world outside. Her isolation has allowed her to hone many skills, including painting, cooking, and even fighting, using her long hair as anything from whip to lasso. But her dearest wish is to leave her tower for just one night, to find the mysterious lights that always appear in the sky on her birthday.

Rapunzel gets her chance when thief Flynn Rider (voiced by Zachary Levi) stumbles across her tower while on the run from the law. She blackmails him into becoming her guide and, reluctantly on his part, they begin their journey together. Along the way, they face perils, flee pursuit, and discover truths about themselves they never suspected.

Like most Disney fairytales, Tangled is a musical, with around half a dozen songs featured in key scenes. The highlight is "I See the Light", at one of the climaxes of the movie, accompanied by an absolutely magical scene of animation.

Tangled is a movie with the Disney logo but the Pixar heart; perhaps not surprising given that one of the executive producers is John Lasseter. Every character development is note perfect, every plot twist rock solid, with all the emotional highs and lows of a transformative journey. It's about finding out who you are and who you choose to be, and deciding what you will fight for and what you will sacrifice for.
